New Year, New You – Certification Maps for 2011

When you decide to make these changes you usually do not take into consideration that figuring out what steps to take next can be so overwhelming, you quit before you start. For example, every year somewhere on my list is to be healthier (I am sure like many of you), but more often than not, sifting through all of the diets and exercise programs out there overwhelms me, and I just continue with my same routine.

Benefits of Obtaining Vendor-Neutral Certifications
Have you been looking for a way to increase your marketability to employers? Vendor-neutral certifications might be the answer because they focus on a technology and not a specific product from a company. These certifications also do not become obsolete as quickly as vendor-specific certifications will.
When a vendor-neutral certification is obtained as a complement to vendor-specific certifications, it shows your flexibility and diversity in handling different scenarios. This means that you will have a broader knowledge base which can be very appealing to employers, because you are not limited to working with one specific product. Vendor-neutral certifications prove that you can use your knowledge in a variety of situations and are well rounded. Sure, you can specialize in a certain direction, but when a problem arises that is outside your area of expertise, do you want to look like the guy who can’t adapt, or the one that can solve everyone’s problems?

LearnKey’s Fast Track to CompTIA “Certify for Life”
If you are looking to start a career in IT and have decided on CompTIA certifications you should be aware of the changes that will be implemented in the coming year. Starting January 1, 2011 when you earn a CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or CompTIA Security+ certification you will have to renew your certification every three years. In the past, earning one of those three certifications guaranteed you “Certified” status for the rest of your life. This seems good for the people earning certifications, but the drawback is that you aren’t required to keep up on current technology – earning your A+ Certification ten years ago meant learning a whole different set of skills than what you would need today. With the new policy, the certified must keep their certifications current by either retaking the current exam or earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs). CEUs are earned a number of ways – attending industry events, teaching/lecturing on relevant industry topics, taking *ahem* computer based training courses…

Strata Fundamentals of IT Technology
The LearnKey production team is hard at work this week and Ammon Wiese is in front of the camera for this course. I asked Ammon if he could share with us how the week has been going so far and what we have to look forward to in the Strata Fundamentals of IT Technology course. Here’s what Ammon had to say…
“Hey LearnKey fans I thought that I would give you an update on how things are going in the studio this week. I am filming CompTIA’s newest certificate exam, Strata Fundamentals of IT Technology. Even though this should be considered an entry-level exam or certificate, you will find that CompTIA has really put together an exam that should be used as a pre-requisite to completing the A+ certification. This course is going to be great we’ve gathered segments from a number of our most popular instructors and along with me, they will teach you everything that you will need to know in order to take the Strata test and pass it with confidence. Changing IT Environment Demands New Strategies for Training, Certifying Workforce, CompTIA Exec Says
On August 12, CompTIA posted a press release concerning a certification update delivered at the CompTIA Breakaway event this week. To summarize, IT jobs are expected to greatly increase over the next several years. With those new jobs, a different set of skills will be required according to industry trends.
“Trends in technology are changing the employment landscape,” Terry Erdle, senior vice president, skills certification, CompTIA, said in remarks delivered at Breakaway 2010, the premier event for IT companies in North America.
“It doesn’t mean that we don’t need people,” he added. “It’s just a different kind of job.”
CompTIAs Certification Renewal Program
CompTIA recently announced plans to require a certification renewal program for individuals certified in A+, Network+, and/or Security+. Previously these three have been lifetime certifications, meaning for example the A+ certification I obtained in 2000 is still valid today. This “certified for life” has been challenged by a perception that certified individuals may not be up to date on the latest technology. Wireless technology for example has changed drastically in the past ten years.
